In Memoriam: Margaret Kitchell and Her Lasting Legacy
Margaret Kitchell was a passionate woman with a strong moral compass and the power to put belief into action. She was a psychiatrist who specialized in geriatric medicine and settled in Seattle and grew her family. Margaret was intent on making a meaningful change in the world and in the ‘90s became focused on global warming and climate activism.
Margaret became a citizen activist. She used her background as a doctor to share how important the environment is for our overall health. She overcame her fear of public speaking to testify in front of state and federal officials. And she started supporting organizations she believed were making a difference, one of which was Ceres.
Margaret’s generosity and dedication is long lasting. She gave consistently throughout her life, both monetary and her time, and left meaningful gifts in her estate when she passed. Julia Buchans, Margaret Kitchell’s daughter, shared about her mother’s legacy, “If her life is any indication, find what you’re passionate about and go all in. Every little thing counts.”
Margaret Kitchell is inspiring, and Ceres was honored to learn that we were a beneficiary in her estate. We are thankful to Julia Buchans for sharing her mother’s lasting impact and wish we had the opportunity to have shown our gratitude to Margaret while she was still with us. If you have designated Ceres in your estate plan, please let us know.
